When you have a forklift certification, this means that you have passed and taken the safety training program that is required to get certification to drive a lift truck. If this is the case, then you have learned everything that you need to know about being safe while operating a lift truck. A forklift is really only as dangerous as you make it. If you do not know the weight limits and try to overload it, you are going to find that you are putting yourself and maybe even someone else in danger by using the lift. Having a certification to operate a lift means that you know what is right and what is wrong when operating a lift truck.
Many businesses will have all of their employees get a forklift certification in order to operate the forklifts that they have on their premises. But they all must still take and pass the safety course for forklift operation. Once you become certified to operate a forklift, you can then legally operate any forklift that you want or need to. However, you may need some training on one that is new to you, and like no other that you have ever used before.
If you are looking to get a forklift certification so that you can get a job driving a forklift, chances are that any company that is willing to hire someone to operate a lift truck will also get them certified. However, getting your certification anyways and just having it is always a great idea. You never know when you might be turned down for that job that you really want just because you had no certification. You can go to most any OHSA approved certification place to get it as well. They will put you through their OHSA approved course and have you take the test and then give you a certificate saying that you passed. But you may have to pay a fee to do this on your own and not through a company.
Having a forklift certification is important if you are going to operate a forklift. You can not legally operate one in the US with out having the proper license or certification. If you are caught, you could possibly have to pay a fine, do jail time, or maybe even be banned from ever getting certified for forklift operation.
