Use A Certified Forklift Instructor.
When you have a forklift certification, this means that you have passed and taken the safety training program that is required to get the necessary certification to drive a lift truck. If this is the case, then you should have learned everything that you need to know from your forklift instructor about being safe while operating a lift truck.
Many businesses will have all of their employees get a forklift certification in order to operate the forklifts that they have on their premises. But they all must still take and pass the safety course for forklift operation. Once you become certified to operate a forklift, you can then legally operate any forklift that you want or need to. Your forklift instructor should have covered in the training various models and any special features that a particular model has. That being said however, you may need some training on a particular forklift that is new to you or like no other one that you have used before.
If you want to become a forklift driver you will need to get a forklift certification. Most companies that use forklifts are happy to pay for a forklift instructor to teach you to get your certification, often in exchange for some agreement to stay in their employment for a set period of time.
The forklift instructors must be certified themselves and follow Occupational Health and Safety standards and practices. As an alternative to get an employer paid for training, you can go to almost any OHSA approved certification place to get it as well. They will put you through their OHSA approved course and have you take the test and then give you a certificate saying that you passed. The difference here is that you may have to pay a fee to do this on your own and not through a company, however the upside is you are free to work for whomever you wish and not bound by any contracts. Having a forklift certification is important if you are going to operate a forklift. You can not legally operate one in the US with out having the proper license or certification. If you are caught, you could possibly have to pay a fine, do jail time, or maybe even be banned from ever getting certified for forklift operation. Select your forklift instructor wisely.
